Historic Perspective excerpted from
“OREGON INVENTORY OF HISTORIC PROPERTIES HISTORIC RESOURCES SURVEY FORM”
(survey is dated 4/20/98 and is believed accurate as of that date)
This house was built shortly after Paul Petri purchased the lot in 1926. Petri and his wife, Lillian Jeffreys Petri, both of Newark, New Jersey, met and worked as musicians in Europe until World War I erupted. Paul Petri sang at the Royal Opera in Dresden, the Ducal Opera at Attenburg and the Municipal Opera at Chemnitz, singing more than 40 parts.
From 1918 to 1924, Mr. Petri taught music in Portland. The Petris came to Corvallis to teach at OSC in 1924, the same year Mrs. Petri’s piano instruction book titled “Mind Over Music” was published. Under Mr. Petri’s guidance, the Glee and Madrigal clubs flourished and went on tour with such performances as “H.M.S. Pinafore” (1928) and “The Chimes of Normandy” (1929). Mr. Petri served as head of the music department for 23 years while Mrs. Petri was a Professor of Piano. The Petris taught at OSC until their retirement in 1947. By 1959, the Petris had passed away and the house was sold to Ruth and Hugo Krueger, a State Department employee.
Aptly named “Casa Musica” by its original owners, this 1-1/2 story house was designed by C.A. Heilman, an architect from Los Angeles. It exhibits standard features of the Tudor Revival style such as decorative half-timbering, multi-paned casement windows, a solid wood door with strap hinges, and a complex plan. The house is enhanced by other decorative features such as ogee-arched windows, multiple dormers, brackets and designed downspouts. Recent alterations include the addition of a garage on the east and extensive modifications to the landscaping. The house retains its character defining features and is in excellent condition.
