Compare Eugene and Corvallis Oregon…

Here’s a fun comparison of the two cities of Eugene, Oregon and Corvallis, Oregon brought to us by VIA the AAA travel magazine.

Since I live in Corvallis and work and play in the entire Willamette Valley , I enjoy reading this kind of thing. And, I can’t help but comment that I listed and sold the Weigand house in the College Hill West Historic Nieghborhood of Corvallis and included cherrys in my marketing materials to represent the Maraschino part of the story.

I’d have to agree that football takes the front seat in fall. It’s everywhere and even if you’re not a big fan of sports in general Beaver Mania is contageous…it grows on you. We see crisp fall days that are spectacular in their beauty that more than make up for the soggy ones.  I’m happy to say I’m a proud sponsor of OSU Athletics.  Go Beavs! 

Beside eating (and there are many more great food places than those listed in the article), there’s some great shopping (Many Hands Trading Center and Radiance by Design to name two), the Arts Center is nearby (always an exhibit and great gift shop), Central Park and the fantastic Corvallis Public Library or enjoy a stroll down Riverfront Park.  On Saturdays or Wednesdays spring through fall enjoy the outdoor market.

Notes from Corvallis Oregon: Wonder what that was all about?

 
Earlier in the week I was at my favorite Corvallis, Oregon coffee place and noticed something sort of interesting… the kind of think that makes one wonder…
 
When I got out of the car I saw a bike parked by the door, it was pretty loaded down, with stuff (like camping stuff).  My first inclination was to think that maybe a homeless person was around and that it was their stuff. I didn’t think too much more about it and went inside.
 
I ordered my drink (20oz dessert in a cup) and while I was waiting for it to come up, out of the rest room comes a guy, I’m guessing late 20’s or so, dressed in green fatigue color clothes, beard and longish hair, trim, tidy and seeming to be very clean…
 
At first I thought he was just talking to himself, but then I realized that he was talking on cell phone with a wireless head-set. And, I hear him say “yea, I got my pack and my gear… I’m in Corvallis, Oregon… it’s wholesome… like Wonder Bread®… yea, wholesome… ya, know”Photo of PB&J Sandwich

 

Homeless  -or- Traveling?
 
Traveling?  -or-  An adventure (maybe a writer)?
 
Wholesome good?  -or-  Wholesome not good?
 
The entire scene took less than 5 minutes.  Wish I’d learned a little more.  It might have been really interesting.

July Exhibit at The Corvallis Arts Center: Far Away

The July exhibit at the Corvalls Arts Center is entitled “Far Away”.

Take a few minutes and make a worthwhile visit to the Arts Center this month for July’s exhibit. The exhibit’s theme was inspired by this years da Vinci Days Festival theme of “map making” which has expanded into the official 2010 theme of “Cosmos”, along with the Community Art Project of “Space Odyssey”. 

This exhibit is fun with an delightful center piece. The artwork is fun and thought provoking.  I walked away just a little lighter in my step and have found my mind drifting back to various pieces.  You’ll be glad you stopped in.

Corvallis Oregon in the Top 5 Bike Friendly Cities

It’s not hard to believe that Corvallis, Oregon is rated in the top 5 bike Friendly Cities in the U.S. (population under 100,000). 

Corvallis has repeatedly ranks as a “bike friendly” place in a variety of sources. Bike lanes, bike education and a population that actually gets on and rides.  The most recent rating is from Bicycling Magazine.

What fun! Recently, I spent some time on-site at the Boys and Girls Club when I was invited to participate in their commercial, which shows local professionals that support the Boys and Girls Club of Corvallis.

I was really impressed with the variety of programs offered to kids of all ages.

Just a reminder: the Annual Fund Raising campaign has an anonymous donor that will match “new” donations. Total matched funds $20,000, deadline is April 1st for the matching aspect. Check out my event on Facebook and join me for Breakfast (it’s free) on April 29th.

The survey compares homes in 120 Football Bowl Subdivision Schools and compares homes of similar size and room count (2,200 square foot, four-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom) throughout these markets. Some Interesting information gleaned from the survey:

  • Average price for this type of home for Oregon State University, in the Corvallis, Oregon market is $317,667
  • The University of Oregon, in Eugene, Oregon ranked 98 and had an average price of $314,038
  • Other West Coast Schools include:
    •  Stanford University, in Palo Alto at $1,489,726
    •  UCLA and USC in Los Angeles, CA at $1,347,125
    •  San Diego Sate University, San Diego, CA at $461,650
    • The University of Washington in Seattle Washington at $568,317
